How to spice up dark hair

How to spice up dark hair? I’ve struggled with this issue for the last couple of years. First of I have long hair and I didn’t want it any shorter than shoulder length ever and so as far as the cut goes I didn’t have too many option other than bangs which I would cut and grow out in about 2-year cycles.

Recently, I managed to find the solution. It is highlights. The reason I’ve been avoiding them for so long is simple. With dark hair, it can easily end up looking like this. This should speak for itself and needs no commentary.

It is significantly easier if you’re blonde, highlights look really natural and they spice up the hairstyle and adds dimension to it. So the question is – how to make highlights look natural on dark hair? Here are the steps you need to take:

1) You bleach the pieces of hair you want to have bleached – the tip is to take many really thin pieces of hair and bleach them in different lengths from your head. The benefit of doing this is first of, making it look significantly more natural and second of, lasts a lot longer, you don’t have to do it every months and it lets you grow the hair out a lot more without looking bad. (DIY tip – always use foil so that you don’t have the bleach spread to areas where you don’t want it to be)

2) Here comes the little trick. When you’re done bleaching, you dye all of your hair with semi-permanent hair color. Not only does this bring all the shades together but it mainly softens the bleach. The semi-permanent color should be slightly lighter than your natural hair color. As it washes out it creates at least 3 different shades of brown that go great together. This also gives you the choice of having rather a red or a gold shade to your hair.

I had this done by a hairdresser but it’s totally doable at home. And if you decide to go to a hairdresser, these are the pictures I showed to mine. I promise to update a picture of my own hair when I have a decent picture of it but what I can do right now is tell you that I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on it.
